Gardner and Poole note that various factors including social isolation and financial worries put older adults at risk for addictions. Their own findings suggest that “narrative therapy” was helpful; participants in their study were able to reduce or halt their substance misuse.

The authors found no relationship between personality traits and the timing of retirement, but did find that those low in Neuroticism and high in Extraversion reported higher retirement satisfaction, and those high in Extraversion reported higher postretirement activity levels.
